Do I need a GP referral for a hearing test?
For a private hearing test, no. You can book directly. For an NHS hearing test, it depends on where you live. Here is how both routes work, and when you should see your GP first.
The private route
You can book a private hearing test directly, with no GP letter. With us, a full 60 minute test is free at our Birmingham clinic, or £50 at home, with results explained the same day and no obligation to buy anything. If we find something that needs a doctor, we write to your GP for you.
The NHS route
On the NHS, hearing tests and hearing aids are free. In many areas you need a GP referral to an audiology service, and in some areas adults can refer themselves directly. Waiting times vary across the country, from weeks to many months. Your GP surgery can tell you how it works locally.
We have written an honest comparison of NHS and private hearing aids if you are weighing up the two.

When to see your GP first
- Sudden hearing loss, in one or both ears, which needs care the same day.
- Ear pain, discharge, or a high temperature.
- Hearing loss or tinnitus in one ear only, especially if it came on quickly.
- Dizziness or vertigo with hearing changes.
- Tinnitus that pulses in time with your heartbeat.
For gradual hearing changes in both ears, a hearing test is usually the right first step, and you can book one directly.
