Understanding tinnitus

A sound with no outside source.

Tinnitus is the experience of hearing sound when nothing around you is making it. It is very common, and it is often linked with hearing loss: as the ear picks up less from the outside world, the brain can become more aware of its own activity. It may come and go or be there all the time, and it is usually most noticeable in quiet rooms and at night.

How we help

Assessment, advice and the right technology.

Every step is part of your hearing test or hearing aid fitting, with no separate tinnitus fee.

1. Full assessment

A complete hearing test, plus questions about your tinnitus: what it sounds like, when you notice it, and how it affects your sleep and concentration.

2. Management advice

Practical strategies that make tinnitus less intrusive, including sound enrichment, better sleep routines and protecting your hearing.

3. Tinnitus sound programs

Where hearing loss is present, hearing aids can make tinnitus far less noticeable. Many also include dedicated relief sounds, set up at your fitting.

4. Referral when needed

If your tinnitus needs further investigation, we write to your GP with your results and recommend a referral to ENT.

Tinnitus technology

Built into the hearing aids we fit.

All four manufacturers we work with offer tinnitus support in their hearing aids. We set it up and fine-tune it to your tinnitus at your fitting.

Tinnitus SoundSupport

A range of relief sounds, including ocean-style sounds, played through the hearing aids.

Tinnitus Balance

A broadband noise generator, adjustable to suit your tinnitus.

Tinnitus Relief

Relief sounds and guided exercises through the ReSound app.

Multiflex Tinnitus

A customisable relief stimulus built into the hearing aid.

When to see your GP first

  • Tinnitus in one ear only
  • Tinnitus that pulses in time with your heartbeat
  • Tinnitus with dizziness, or after a head injury

Sudden hearing loss is urgent. If you lose hearing suddenly, in one or both ears, contact your GP or NHS 111 the same day, rather than waiting for a routine hearing test.

Frequently asked questions.

No. It is part of your hearing test, free in clinic or £50 at home, and tinnitus sound programs are set up as part of your hearing aid fitting.

Often, yes. When tinnitus comes with hearing loss, hearing more of the world around you can make the tinnitus much less noticeable. Many hearing aids also include dedicated tinnitus sound programs.

For some people it settles on its own. For others, the right support makes it far less noticeable, so it no longer affects daily life or sleep.

No, you can book directly. If we find something that needs further investigation, we write to your GP and recommend a referral to ENT.

Yes. We assess tinnitus as part of a home hearing test across Birmingham and the West Midlands, for £50, with evening and weekend appointments.

The most common cause is hearing loss, including age-related and noise-induced hearing loss. Earwax, ear infections and some medicines can also play a part, which is why a full hearing test and ear examination is the right first step.
