Should I remove earwax myself?
Honestly, no. Ears are self-cleaning, and most home methods cause the very blockages we treat. Here is how the options compare.
Microsuction What we use
A small suction device lifts the wax out while we look directly into the ear. No water, and safe for most people, including many with perforated eardrums.
Syringing
Water is flushed into the ear to push wax out. It can work, but it is less precise and more uncomfortable for many people.
Olive oil drops
Drops soften wax and are genuinely useful before an appointment, but on their own they rarely clear a build-up that has hardened.
Cotton buds and ear candles
Buds push wax deeper and compact it against the eardrum. Ear candles have no evidence behind them and can cause burns.

What happens at your appointment.
Four simple steps, all gentle, all explained as we go. Around 30 minutes from start to finish.
We look inside each ear, using an otoscope, to make sure wax really is the problem and that it is safe to remove.
The wax is lifted out with a small suction device while we look directly into the ear. A little noisy, but painless for almost everyone.
With your ears clear, we check your hearing so you know exactly where you stand. Included in the £60.

Before your appointment
You do not need to do anything special. If your wax is very hard or has built up over a long time, a few days of olive oil drops beforehand can make removal quicker and more comfortable, and we will tell you if that applies to you.

Aftercare, keeping ears clear
Your ears may feel wonderfully clear straight away. To keep them that way:
- Keep your ears dry for 24 to 48 hours
- Avoid cotton buds and other objects
- Contact us if pain or dizziness lingers
- Wax-prone? Ask us about regular check-ins
When to see your GP instead.
Earwax removal is the right appointment for blocked ears. Some symptoms need a doctor first.
- Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears
- Severe ear pain or swelling
- Bleeding or discharge from the ear
- Severe dizziness or a spinning sensation
- Signs of infection, such as fever with ear pain
- An object stuck in the ear
These need your GP, NHS 111, or urgent care, not a routine wax appointment. And if we spot anything like this during your ear check, we will pause, explain what we have seen, and refer you to your GP or an ENT specialist with a letter, rather than carry on.

Best not. Ears clean themselves, and cotton buds, ear candles and home kits tend to push wax deeper or damage the ear. If drops alone have not cleared it, professional removal is the safe route.
No, it is generally painless. It can be a little noisy, and ears sometimes feel slightly sensitive afterwards, but the procedure itself is well tolerated.

Yes. It is widely considered the safest and most comfortable method of earwax removal. It is water-free and performed under close visual guidance throughout, which is why it is safe for many people who cannot have syringing.
Yes, £60 either way. We cover Birmingham, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Coventry, Dudley, Walsall, West Bromwich, Redditch, Shrewsbury and Burton on Trent, and we visit care homes too.
Not usually. If your wax is particularly hard or compacted, a few days of olive oil drops can help, and we will suggest it if we think it applies to you.
The appointment fee still applies. You are booking the full ear examination, our time and expertise, and your hearing check, not just the removal itself. If something other than wax is causing the problem, that examination is exactly how we find it.
Occasionally, very hard or heavily built up wax needs softening first. If so, we will recommend drops for a few days and arrange a follow-up to finish the job.
If we see signs of infection, a perforated eardrum, or anything else that needs a closer look, we will explain what we have found and refer you to your GP or an ENT specialist rather than proceed.
A hearing check is already included free with every earwax removal. If it suggests a full assessment would help, we can book you a free 60 minute hearing test as a next step.
